History of Scouting in the City of Sheffield 1975-1980

 
1975-76
'Air Activities expands its badge courses to include Master Airman, Metrologist and Navigator. A twin-seat glider is obtained

The (first?) Hucklow Walk takes place

Sheffield Scouts are part of the Guard of Honour at the Cutlers' Hall on the occasion of the visit of the Queen to the the City

Ten Sheffield Scout and one Sheffield Scouter attend the 10th World Jamboree at Lillehammer in Norway and one Scout from the City attends a member of the national band contingent

The Sheffield Scout rescue team is formed with about 25 members and six in training. It holds weekend training sessions in the Rhinog Mountains in North Wales and visits Groups to give talks on aspects of mountain safety, climbing and mountain rescue. During the year it is called out to assist in two searches

Mrs Raye Bacon is appointed General Secretary of the Local Association
   
1976-77
The BP Scout Guild becomes the Scout Fellowship
Girls are invited to join Venture Scouts


The 69th Sheffield (Mosborough) Cub Pack wins the National Sausage Sizzle Championship (and is in effect the World Champions
   
1977-78
The Sheffield Scout Rescue Team works as an integral member of the Woodhead Rescue Team which in turn is part of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation

Scouts and Ventre Scouts from the City act as stewards at Hillsborough Park for a visit by the Queen and Price Philip as part of he Silver Jubilee celebrations
   
1978-79
A very severe winter causes the Holmstrom Trophy to be postponed twice and eventually it takes the form of a circular route within the City boundary - the various checkpoints being at Group Headquarters. It incorporated igloo building at Whiteley Woods

The weather also increased the number of call-outs attended by the Sheffield Scout Rescue Team

Sheffield Scouts, Leaders and members of the Scout Fellowship assist in the 13th National Scout Band Festival at Brammall Lane
 
1979-80
The Chief Scout, Sir William Gladstone, visits Hesley Wood3.and tours sites being run by each of the Sheffield Districts. He awards a record number of Chief Scout's Award Certificates - the Certificates being printed especially for the occasion

The International Jamboree in Iran is cancelled. However, the South Yorkshire contingent goes on an expedition to New Mexico

An experimental course for the Civics Badge is run by South Yorkshire Police

New Venture Scout Units are formed at High Green and Shiregreen

900 walkers take part in the Hucklow Walk and raise over £2200. Walkers raising over £19 are awarded the 'Hucklow' neckerchief
